Lesson Plan Title:
The use of the portfolio in the classroom
Grade: 5th
Concept/Topic to teach:
Preparation of a Portfolio
Standards Addressed:
Listening/Speaking (L/S.5.5)
Writing (W.5.3)
General Goals:
Students will develop a sense of what a portfolio is and learn to keep their paper work organize.
Specific Goals:
1. Define what a portfolio is.
2. Create a portfolio for classroom use.
3. Demonstrate their portfolio to classmates.
Required Materials:
1. Folder
2. Crayons
3. Scissors
4. Glue
5. Extra decorations that the students would like to use.
Anticipatory set (lead –In):
1. Greeting
2. Attendance
3. Date and day of the month
4. Introduction of the activity that will be given.
Step by step Procedures:
The teacher will ask the students if they are acquainted with what is a portfolio. She will then proceed to explain the definition of what is a portfolio and what it is used for. She will then hand out a folder and a worksheet: A Handy -Dandy Class (which is a hand) in which students will describe themselves by writing complete sentences and their names will also be printed nice and big so it is visible for everyone to see. Students will proceed to decorate as they wish. Teacher will play background music for the students to listen to while they work.
Plan for Independent Practice:
Students will be responsible to save their assessments when they are done. At the end of the semester students will be able to show their progress to their parents.
Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set):
Students will add assessments given to them from previous classes and they will share their portfolio covers with the class.
